It's not easy to give an exact definition, but let’s say it's a step up from a regular cash register. An EPoS system will contain some of the following elements: A Computer, Screen, Bar Code Scanner, Till Drawer, Receipt printer and usually a network link to either a back office pc or to Head Office as required.

An important trend in EPoS systems in recent years is that an increasingly high proportion of systems are now PC-based. This means that they use many of the same components as a normal computer: i.e. screens, keyboard, operating systems and the price of such systems has reduced in line with the PC's themselves.

Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System

Microsoft Dynamics RMS is a 32bit Windows-based EPoS application. All sales transactions are recorded immediately and the inventory records are updated on-line in real time. Each point of sale PC terminal can be used as a standalone unit or on a network of multiple Point of Sale terminals linked to a back office PC. All client, inventory and pricing information entered in the back office is instantly available at the point of sales terminals. Systems can be configured for single branch or multi-branch operation.
